Crionics interview

CRIONICS formed in January 1997 with the line-up of Michał Skotniczny (voc, g), Dariusz Styczeń (g), Marek Kowalski (bg) and Maciek Zięba (dr) to play fast yet melodious metal. The line-up played several live dates which, in turn, led to hiring a keyboard player who would round up the sound - Wacław Borowiec was brought into the fold and the stage sound started to resemble what the band achieved in the studio. In late 1999, due to both musical and personal reasons, Dariusz Styczeń had to leave the band to be replaced by Bartosz Bielewicz. Bielewicz took part in the recording of the next material entitled “Beyond The Blazing Horizon” which comprises “Episode Of The Falling Star,” “Fireland,” “Waterfalls Of Darkness,” “There Was Neither Ground Nor Firmament (Precipice Gaped)”. In 2000 this 20-minute material was released on Demonic Records as a MCD.

In early 2002 the CRIONICS resumed live appearances - they are always on the lookout for more dates. Before summer, the band finished writing their new tracks, which brought them a contract with Empire Record. The debut album entitled “Human Error (Ways To Self-destruction)” was recorded between 12 and 23 August 2002 in the Hertz Studio. The album comprises 10 energetic black death metal tracks in the vein of MORBID ANGEL, EMPEROR, DIMMU BORGIR. During the session the band also recorded the cover of CARPATHIAN FOREST’s self-titled track. The album came out on 25 November 2002 and so far garnered positive responses in all relevant Polish metal media. Soon afterwards, the band embarked on their first 9-date promotional tour as a support for BEHEMOTH, DARKANE and FRONTSIDE. On stage, the band is helped by Yanuary (THY DISEASE, ANAL STENCH) on guitars. CRIONICS is the best “Newcomer” in Poland in 2002! Europe will see their debut CD in May 2003.

interview with Waran.

Please give us a short introduction of yourself?
Hail. We’re CRIONICS from Cracow, Poland. We play mixture of black and death metal, and are said to be inspired with EMPEROR, MYRKSKOG, DIMMU BORGIR. We play since 1996, our present line-up is: Waran - voc, guit, Vac-v - synth, Marcotic - bass and Darkside - drums. We’re thinking about session - guitarist who would help us playing live, ’cause I think one guitar is not enough to have sufficient powerful sound. Our debut album is “Human Error (Ways to Selfdestruction)” and in Europe it should come out on the 20th of May. More information at: http://www.crionics.prv.pl

Did you take your bandname from the Slayer song? If yes why not put that song as a cover on your disc?
Yes, we did. We even thought of it one day, but we realised “Crionics” isn’t suitable song to CRIONICS’s music. Besides, maybe one day we will record it. To put someone else’s track on you album you have to pay some money due to copyrights, so our version CARPATHIAN FOREST’s “Carpathian Forest” is available only on our website, although we recorded it during “Human Error” session.

How did it felt to be chosen as best newcomer? Expected it? Who did you beat?
We feel like before it, bur we’re glad, of course. I should add best POLISH newcomer by ’Thrash’em All” readers, overtaking ENTER CHAOS, ANIMA DAMNATA and f.ex. SUPERJOINT RITUAL by “Mystic Art” magazine. It was surprise for us, and we have to show we were worthy of these words.

Which recognition do you appreciate the most? From your parents, label, fans?
It was from metal maniacs and our label. Our parents are against our musical activity, and they hate this music, ha, ha.

What is the reason to create such blast songs? Lot of anger? Lack of sensative emotions?
We love blasts and think it should be one of the main metal music elements. I hope on second album there will be more blasts.

Why are a lot of extreme bands coming from Poland? Economic situation? Fatherland of the Pope?
I have no idea, but you’re right, we have many extreme bands here, anyone who have a possibility to be in our scene should check it.

What is the most enjoyable part of being in a band?
Playing live surely is, because it is connected with partying... Seriously, playing the music you like is the most enjoyable thing and when someone else likes what you’ve created.

Do you help other bands if possible? What is the best advice for starting bands?
We have no opportunity to help other bands yet, but we’re ready to do it, when there’s good horde we’ll like. Most important is to go hardly for what you want to reach, play most often you can, and sometimes... practice, ha, ha.

Who is your favourite cartoon hero? And why?
Maybe Batman... Why? He’s wearing black.

Is it easy to get gigs after the 1st album?
It isn’t easy in Poland, especially when you think about good, well-organised concerts. To tour is almost impossible, but we were able to play nine gigs with BEHEMOTH, DARKANE and FRONTSIDE last year.

And is it easy to get gigs in your area? And outside your area? To which country would like to tour?
We would like to tour everywhere where metalheads would like to see CRIONICS.

Are you doing packaging tours with other bands? Do you help each other?
Rather not, till now. It is often some people organise a concert and are not connected with any band, but I know that many bands have played under these conditions, one band invites the other band to his town and then the situation inverses. If you mean touring, this is impossible unless you’re a headliner.

What are your fav three bands to go on tour with? Why?
BEHEMOTH, CARPATHIAN FOREST and THY DISEASE. Because they are rock-alco-rollers and like partying too.

Do you have other interests beside music where you can speak about? Other people you share this interest with?
Drinking... with anyone who’s interested in it.

Are you a member of something beside the band?
Yes, I am member of... other bands - SCEPTIC and ANAL STENCH.

How serious do you take life in general? What is the meaning of life? What is your goal on earth?
To live in your own way, don’t care what others think about you, to remain faithful to your ideals and to be honest with yourself.

Belief in life after death? Where will the soul go? Think you can live after you have been frozen?
Don’t believe. The only way to exist after death, to be in next generations’ life you is what you can reach with you music, paintings, buildings - art, in general. The “soul” will go anywhere you want to. Cryogenics is good way to safe many, worthy human beings from death, and probably, one day it will be able to froze and wake a man safely.

What goal do you wanna achieve in your personal life? What is your dream since you were a kid?
There were many dreams since then. Now, it is playing concerts, recording albums - all in professional way, and earning money from... anything.

If you had enough money what would you like to do with it?
Firstly, I would organise big, crazy party with lot of friends, booze and bitches. Next I would buy all needed equipment for the band and big house to practice and party in it.

Do you wanna say something I forgot to ask?
Yeah, listen to “Human Error” and bang your heads for Satan!

Last rites?
Drink vodka, especially Polish. See you on tour one day!
