Depredation destroying anything

Depredation was founded by current guitarist Maurice and Rob (vocals). Since the end of 2002 Depredation operates with 5 bandmembers (again) after a lot of line-up changes. Depredation 2003 plays brutal death metal and is preparing a lot of new songs to play at live shows. Depredation is also writing new material to record another demo that is scheduled later this year! With the coming of the latest 2 band members solo's are put back in the songs and this gives the final (brutal) touch to the songs they are still playing and the new songs that they are now writing. The new material is more catchy and brutal than the older stuff and Depredation wants to let you hear the difference at all the coming live shows and gigs to come! Some influences of the band are: Morbid Angel/Cannibal Corpse, Incantation & Dying Fetus. The main purpose of the band is to play brutal death death metal for everybody who likes it (and those who hate it).

Please give us a short introduction of yourself?
My name is Maurice ’Caveman’ van Dijck. (Playing ’Cousin-It’ on stage)
I drink beer, play guitar in Depredation and destroy anything that stands in my way.

Any need to introduce your mates? Maybe unveil some personal secrets?
My band-mates are:
Rob ’Bullfrog’ van Roosmalen (He plays with Transformers).
Dirk ’Animal’ Verspaget (Very proud at his butt-hair).
Johan ’Impetigo’ v. Eyk (Just don't get him angry... stay away from his bass-gear).
Patrick ’Bulldozer’ Vriens (Fuckin' ’sweat-lover’).

Why changed the name in the beginning? Other bands? Wrong name for brutal death?
We changed our name in the beginning Ôcause another band already used it and had an album out! (the new name fits better anyway).

Did you use the dictionairy to look for a suitable bandname?
Rob uses a dictionary as standard gear....so I did not use that thing to find a good bandname!... I just heard that word in a movie and it sounded very cool to me.

How many times a day do you curse?
How many times I curse a day??? Goddamn what the fuck of an idiot question is that?.... like I count every fuckin' time I curse another asshole or bitch!

Why does Rob have short hair? He could have long hair after the founding in 1997!
Why Rob has short hair??? Why do you???... I don't know maybe he's just to lazy to get long hair.

In your bio stands that you started out as brutal death, changed style after couple of years and play brutal death in 2002. So what other style did you play?
In the beginning we had a lot of clean elements in our music... and we used to play a lot slower at that time. After some band-line up changes and getting more technique we started to play faster and more brutal.

Feel the need to experiment in the new songs? To step out of the line of other brutal DM bands?
In het new songs we experiment with more breaks and interesting/catchy lick's... we're not trying to break free from other styles... we just want to play what gives us the best feeling in playing death metal... I like speed but there must be some real cool breaks and mosh riff elements in the music... if your only playing on speed people can have troubles recognizing songs at live shows... I hate that when I'm looking at a band that's preforming live... so that's why we have the urge to do this up and down tempo's wtih catchy riffs.

What are your fav bands and why?
My favorite bands are: Morbid Angel / Immolation / Incantation / Dying Fetus & Cryptopsy

Why they are my favorites?... all these bands together have the elements in their music that I like the most in death metal and that's why the new songs sound like a mixture of those bands... not because I'm writing with their music in my mind... it just seems to sound like stuff they do to!!!

So tell something about the new demo? Happy with the end result?
We are very happy with the results of the latest demo... but it's a shame we changed the line up with new bandmembers after recording it Ôcause all the songs of the demo now have solo's (because we have 2 guitarplayers at this moment)... those solo's are not played at the demo 'cause I would only play what we can preform on stage (with one guitarplayer).

I had enough of inspiration to play solo's on the demo... I do not find them to difficult to play... but when I would start to play them live the brutal sound would have dissapeared 'cause we only used one guitarplayer at that time.... so we choose to record the songs just the same as we would play them live.

What are the differences compared to the older recordings?
Everything else went ok with the demo... it was pretty cheap and we recorderd and mixed that timebomb in 10 hours. The next one will have a better sound and solo's on all the songs... but that's scheduled later this year.

The older recordings sound real bad in sound-quality and the music is too different compared with the latest style we are playing in. The new stuff is simply more death metal than the older stuff!!!

Why are there no guitarleads on the MCD? Don't you like them? Difficult to play as the only guitarplayer?
My ultimate guitargod is Trey Azagtoth... I like his way of writing... I like his songs structures... I totally dig his solo-style.... he just plays a style that is not of this world!!!! I came in contact with his music when the Abominations album found his way to a taperecorder at a party of some friends. It was a bootleg album at that time but it totally destroyed my ears and I just fuckin' loved it. I stole that tape at that party... so don't publish this sentence please!

Which guitarist made you start picking up the guitar? Why and when did you came in contact with him?
I already met Trey Azagtoth at a live gig of Morbid Angel and I asked him what drives him to play so isane and he said... I just put my mind to it and everything comes by itsself... That man was really relaxed and stood 5min. After his own show in the crowd talkin' to all the fans that came to him!!!

How deep is metal involved in your daily life? What do you do for a living and in your spare time?
Metal is what I breath and think of all the time. Everythng I feel I translate to music... everything I do is listen to metal and collecting everything that has something to do with it. In my spare time I write songs for the band and put all kinds of shit on our site... My job.... is not interresting to know.... it's something with technique and computers... that's enough to know... and I customize guitars for friends.

Do you like promoting Depredation? Which promotion do you prefer? Mags, radio, concerts etc.
I like promoting the band at all kinds of ways... stickers, shirts, site, mags, flyers everything that can help us to get gigs and maybe a crazy label to promote our shit more and more. (and maybe record an album).

Are you contributing to the metal scene in any way?
We will help you to fuck up your ears at our live shows... so yeah we are contributing something in the scene... the most important rule... togehter with all the other bands we are keeping the scene alive....

Last rites?
Come see us at one of our gigs.... let us surprise you with new songs... Thankzz for this interview and spending my precious time.
