Mammutant don’t give any bull, but a lot sadistic humor!

Mammutant are one of those bands who, when they have something to say, make sure they’re heard. Whether it is through loud, aggressive industrially tinged music that really picks up on the ears or twisted costumes, they really know how to put on a show in the studio and on stage. They’ve recently released their second album, ‘Atomizer,’ which is a brutal follow-up to their 2006 debut. Fans were really blown away by their ability to create harsh industrial metal that is tightly knit and coldly inhuman while somehow being seductively catchy. When comparing oneself to bands like Kovenant who also perform industrial metal while also delving into theatrics, Mammutant certainly look fearsome and respectable indeed. I got a chance to talk with the band about their recent album and enjoyed their brief nihilistic, if not sometimes humorous, answers.

Hello from BRUTALISM. Your second album was recently released. How does the band feel about Atomizer’s reception?
Well, take it or leave it. We take over this cadaverous planet and leave you stiff and cold anyway!

What’s the main concept behind Atomizer?
It’s the story of the cyberzerker-legions, who will take over this cadaverous planet and enslave or exterminate mankind in the process!

Does the band feel it is following a similar direction as opposed to your first album, or did you want to experiment a bit more?
It follows the same direction as on the first album, but less experimental this time.

Some webzines/ websites have called you guys industrial metal. Where would Mammutant place themselves?
That’s just a word, and doesn’t really describe our sound. I myself prefer to call it apocalyptic but that’s just another word, it’s the bone-crushing soundtrack to the end of the world.

So why choose this particular band name?
Because it describes our sound and concept quite well.

When starting Mammutant, what did the group have in mind? Was it to be serious or to have fun?
You could say we wanted to have some serious fun.

Considering you guys like to wear costumes and bring out a lot of theatrics, it seems like a lot of fun. What do you think separates the bands who try to create their sci fi, fantasy, horror image and bring it to life as opposed to those who just perform the music but don’t REALLY immerse themselves in the music? Is it easier, harder, etc?
It is more effort, but supports the whole concept better, than just going onstage and playing your instrument. The eyes want to get spoiled too… until we take it out and eat it.

What do you think is the most distinguishable feature of Mammutant? Either in your performances or music or lyrics, etc?
I would say it’s the master plan that combines music, story, lyrics and performance.

What is the band’s influence, especially with the new album?
The upcoming apocalypse!

Do you find it easy to find metal fans who appreciate your albums in your home country or has there been better reception elsewhere?
Everywhere we go, we are being worshipped. It’s astounding what a little torture can do.

What do you think metal fans expect from your music?
Maybe they expect their brains to boil and explode, ‘cause that’s just what happens.

Do fans’ opinions shape your music, such as in the way of comments and reviews, or do you mostly just create whatever you want and leave it to fate to choose whether the listeners will like it or not?
Nobody but us has any influence on what the music will sound like since this isn’t some kind of casting band.

Throughout the years, industrial metal has changed through leaps and bounds. How does Mammutant evolve their style to keep their sound different from so many different industrial-tinged bands out there?
I just pay attention to what comes out of my twisted mind, quite simple.

Do you find the studio life easier or is touring more exciting (it must be because you get to dress up like every day is Halloween :)
But Halloween is everyday, no?

Describe a typical tour day for the band.
Taking drugs, raping pets, drinking liquor, eating human guts and testicles, wasting hotel rooms… what any rockstar would do, you know!

If you could tour with any three bands, who would they be and why?
Metallica, Madonna, Michael Jackson, ‘cause they sell so many expensive tickets, and they all start with an M!

In the metal music world, how has it changed since Mammutant began? Do you think it has gotten better or worse?
Hmmm, I don’t know if it has changed that much, the scene just got bigger. (It’s more yummy meat for hungry me!)

Are there any acts out there that you REALLY appreciate, or despise? Why?
We hate and despise any kind of music, ‘cause it hurts our ears!

Lastly, to the fans… Obviously they are the heart of the machine here. What is the craziest/ nicest thing that a fan has done for the band that has really made an impression?
One day a fan cut off his head and sent it to me in a package as a gift. Very nice!
