Ninnuam seeing SpongeBob in their circlepits

interview with Kim on 10-09-2004

Please give us a short introduction of yourself?
NINNUAM is a 6 piece death/black metalact from Sweden. Instead of me blabbering about our life story go read our complete bio att www.ninnuam.com. One thing I just have to tell you though is that we have recently released our debut album entitled ’Process Of life Separation’ through Crash media Inc.

So what is the meaning of Ninnuams existence? What can you add to the scene?
The live performance is the heart of our existence. Playing live in front of a crowd that goes completely crazy is probably the best thing you can do, we absolutely love it. So I guess the only good answer to the question is basically that we do it just for fun, but in someway we also do it for our fans. I think that the live experience of seeing Ninnuam separates us from many other band of our size, with regard of a more theatrical and more evil show than others.

Ninnuam’s music may not be breaking any new ways or be classified as original, but our mix of various metal styles definitely adds some spice to the metal scene of today. I can honestly say that there is no one out there that sounds exactly the same as we do. Some part of our music has of course been heard before, but not necessarily the way of using these elements.

How well known is Fred Trenser in your country? To whom is he referring?
Do you mean the guy that got killed? Well, according to our lawyers we aren't allowed to talk about that, ha, ha... Fred Trenser is actually just a fictitious person and not referring to anyone special. It's all just made up for the concept of the album artwork. The guy that we used for the cover is a friend of us that are living in the same city as we do. The fun thing is that his real name is about the same as Fred Trenser, so there has been a lot of reactions around the pictures of him being dead, since everybody in our town recognize him.

And why did you put the name of Mengele in the artwork? Don't you think you get negative reactions?
We picked the name Mengele becuase we thought that it would be the worst guy possible to perform an autopsy. Don't you think that to? I don't believe that people will get the wrong idea about this. But just so that you all know, we condemn everything the Nazis did during the world war II.

Is there a lot of crime in your town? Do you something for the community to make it safe on the streets?
We live in a small sleeping town with a population less than 30.000 people so there is not that much to be worried about here.

What is the most vicious crime you can imagine? Interest in serial killers?
All those things that took place in Norway in the mid ninetieth by the satanists was pretty vicious. Murder, cannibalism etc. Well, I guess I don't have to tell you about what went on over there. We tend to write our lyrics and describe them from a psychopaths point of view so there is definetely some interest in killers and other derangedpersons and it's shown in our music.

Ever picked up by the police yourself?
Well, lets' say that there has been a couple of tickets and some some disagreements with the local police a couple of times but nothing serious though.

Think that SpongeBob Squarepants bought your album? Why?
Yeah, I definitely think that SpongeBob has our CD. Don't let his show fool you, he is a real metalhead and his gig at MTV is just a part time thing. He is usually seen at concerts doing stagedives and being right in the middle of circlepits.

Rumours go about your bloody performances. Is it true and what can we expect?
There is a fair amount of blood in our live shows. Among other things that has become one of our trademarks. We want to give the crowd watching our shows something more than just the music and we try to make the shows as exciting and extreme as possible.

Would it be easy to join an European tour? Are you all working daytime jobs?
All of us have somehow managed to get employed and are now working full time. That doesn't mean that it's impossible for us to go on a tour, and we are actually hoping that the opportunity will rise. As I told you earlier the main reason why this band exists is to do live performances so if someone wants us to join a tour I'm pretty sure that we won't hesitate to do it.

With which bands would you like to share the tourbus? Why?
There are a number of bands that would be awesome to hit the road with. It would be really cool to be a opening act for some well known act like The Haunted or Entombed. That would give us the opportunity to play in front of larger crowds and I guess that we got a lot to learn from these ’oldies’.

How far will your sacrifices go for the music?
This is something we do on our spartime since all of us are working full time, It's still our main priority but we play mainly just becuase it's so damn fun to do. At this point we don't want it to get to serious and having to make to many sacrifices. In the end, it's just music. You never know what lays ahead and and maybe someday in the future we will be able to take this one step further. but for now we don't think that we need to do any changes, we are pretty satisfied with how everything is working for us at the moment.

Think you be still a musician when you reach 50?
Probably, not nesessarliy playing brutal metal all covered up in blood but I think that we all will be involved in music some how.

Ever met a granddad who listen to metal?
I've seen some really old folks at various metal concerts. However I belive that it's a pretty rare sight.

You wanna say something to the youth of today?
Be yourself and ignore what other people tells you about how you should be and act like.

Last rites?
