The Monolith Deathcult wants to be rich

The Monolith Deathcult consists of experienced ex-musicians from well known acts as Altar & Dead Head and plays deathmetal in the vein of Nile...
Hyperspeed drums, hysterical guitarsolo’s, blasphemous lyrics and a very brutal, triple vocal attack are the main trademarks of this new brutal cult. Lyrically the band often refers to Vlad The Impaler and his battle against the Turks.

So tell us the real bandname? Is it only Monolith (also a USA band) or The Monolith Deathcult?
The official name is The Monolith Deathcult, also due to the existence of the aforementioned US Monolith. But it’s Monolith, or rather TMDC for short. Interesting anekdote is that only weeks after our website was online, we already had a mail from the US Monolith demanding that we stop our website and change our name and all references to “monolith” or they’d sue us. So we wrote them back a mail to inform them that their solicitor’s jurisdiction ended on the beginning of the great big pond, together with a list of 20 other bands who use “Monolith” in their name, and we wished them a lot of success in sued all of them.

Why do you refer to the Slayers of Jihad? Where comes this interest from? Not afraid to get negative religious responses?
Many metalbands lash out to christianity, while many forget the atrocities committed in the name of the Islam rather than Christianity. We wanted to take an original approach to the proven concept of being again any form of organised religion, and this was what came out. In something as illogical as religion, one is bound to get responses from freaked-out fanatics.

Do you finding the lyrics important? Think people will read them and dicuss about it during diner?
I think lyrics are important in as much that they should actually have something to say instead of blood, gore, dead people, tanks, and the usual stuff.

The band consist of known bandmembers. Does it help mentioning the old bands? Do they still exist? Still have contact with them?
It does open some doors, yes. Of course we still have contact with them, as they were not only bandmembers but also friends.

How is the UG scene here in Holland? Everybody knows everybody? Helping each other? Easy to get gigs?
When you get to know the underground scene you suddenly realise that it is, very, very, very small, and the same familiar faces keep popping up everywhere. Which is on the one hand a good thing, on the other hand it can work against you, with the scene being so small I can imagine that it’s easy to “over-play” a part of the country, by which I mean that you play in a certain area of the country too much so people won’t turn out to your show anymore because they already saw you a number of times.

Why are you playing metal music? Getting lost of your aggression? Just insane with metal? Or any other reason?
How do you see your CD buyers? Can you make an image how they look like? Their education? Their social status?
I think our buyers are very diverse.. from 50-year old academics to 13-year old sk8terbois... Actually I think we should make a questionnaire for our buyers, you’d probably be surprise about the diversity that would show up.

What music do you play in your car? How many watt speakers do you have? Do you play it loud and have open windows?
I play it at moderate volume.. can’t remember what kind of speakers I have exactly, but they are two Pioneers. And no, the windows are usually closed, if it’s one thing I hate then it’s those sad motherfuckers driving up and down the streets in their gay tuned cars with house music @ volume 11, hanging out of the windows like the pathetic gay wankers they are...

What kind of stickers are on the back of your car? Why?
I have a lot of metal stickers to piss off religious people that may be driving behind me.

How is the tour going with The Crown and Skinless? Is it easy to get free from work? What kind of reactions from the crowd? Selling many shirts?
Getting free from work wasn’t easy or difficult, we just notified our bosses that we wouldn’t be available in that period, and if they’d make a fuss we would probably all have resigned. Reactions from the crows were good, we sold out all the CDs we brought.

Your fav curse word?
Kankerrrrrrr!

Do you follow the resurrected bands like Exodus, Nuclear Assault etc? What do you think of that hype? Did you follow them in the beginning? What kind of bands do you like today and why?
Did you have a denim jacket with all those patches? Still have them? Pity that today those clothes are rare to see?
No, no and no. I’m not oldschool enough for that stuff.

Think it is important to dress metallic? So others can see you are in the metal business?
Nah.. I think it’s pretty pathetic if you want your character to be defined by your image or the way you dress.

With what kind of toys did you play in your childhood? Still playing games on the PC or PS2?
I played with LEGO™ a lot, as a child I was creative and constructive and I still am, only in music.. I never owned of them trendy game consoles, I had a bunch of C64s and Amigas, and on the latter I would make pretty crappy house music.

Do you like growing up? What is the hardest part of being a grown up?

How do you see the future for the band? Think you make progression? In what way?
There will be progression in every imaginable way. The tour has helped us to grow immensely, musically, technically, and perhaps even more important, professionally. Touring is a sort of a crash course in how to take care of your gear, how to do proper and quick build-ups, soundchecks, and all that. Very interesting.

Is there a statement you wanna make but you don't support?
“Keep supporting the underground!”

Last rites?
Buy our stuff, make us rich, famous and even more arrogant! ;)
