Between The Killings - The Killing Quartet Vol. 2: Omnipotence
Between The Killings are grasping the metal scene by the throat with their new EP titled “Omnipotence”. With a total of 5 songs of relentless brutally thrashing death metal, you are sure to havr your most severe cravings of metallic lust satisfied tenfold. This EP is reminiscent of bands like Deeds of Flesh, Retch, Internal bleeding, Dying Fetus, and a somewhat rawer version of Origin. These guys are reaching out in every direction for vibes and influences and are coming up with some memorable riffs and drum work. While there is more than likely some triggering going on here, I have to admit that drummer Justin Wallisch does an excellent job keeping this thundering rhythm in check. Simplistic yet technically sound, this guy is of a new breed of drummer, yet has the same determination and drive that has been shown by mater drummers before him. Miles Ellegood and Von Young handle the guitar duties with Miles handling lead duties. These guys have their craft down to a science on these 5 tracks and they pull no punches from the first note to the last. You could consider them prime examples of great traditional/semi-tech death metal riffage. Ian Dygulski is on bass and does an excellent job on keeping the pulse flowing. Deep in the mix of things, he lurks like a wolf in the shadows waiting to strike.
Lastly, Braxton Keyser is on vocals and does a decent job given the presented material. I would have liked to have heard a little more variation with a “thicker” growl, but nonetheless, the vocals still get the job done and the point across. These 5 guys got together and laid down some pretty hefty death metal, and it’s metal like this that keeps the scene and genre alive. It’s also bands like Between The Killings that motivate other bands in the scene around the world to get together and spread their massive concoctions of blasphemy unto the world. I guess that’s kind of saying the same thing twice, but in my defense, I am going to listen to this EP twice! Perhaps even three of 4 times. Even though it’s a short piece of metallic vulgarity, it hits hard and warrants multiple hits of the play button. I am anxiously awaiting their next full-length as I am sure it will be packed full of more ungodly riffs and vocals on top of more intensified drumming. These guys have the right mix to be legends in the underground, and this is an EP that will be talked about for years to come. Contact the band or Comatose Music for more info on this release!
