Siroll! - Al Gra!

Siroll! are a five piece Death Thrash band from Spain that have been active since roughly 2008 and their fourth full length album dropped this year in June. Avoiding the typical Death Thrash route by trying to sound like Vader or even Legion of the Damned, they perform a rather mid paced chuggy type of music that is very catchy and similar to a mix of Soulfly meets “Are You Dead Yet?” era from Children of Bodom (minus keyboards). It is rough and somewhat repetitive (like Slayer) but catchy and listenable. “Al Gra!” took the longest time to make compared to their other albums, but it sounds crisp, rowdy, and fun. A bit more trimmed than their last album the music is barely a half hour, but listeners will still enjoy it without feeling like it is another EP.

The guitars are the focus throughout the album and feature lots of melody in them- thanks to guitarists Juame Roca and En Venty- who present that Children of Bodom melody before delving in the Soulfly styled chug on the opening ‘Prou.’ The vocals are certainly Cavalera style from Gou- more raspy bellows than growls so it straddles the line between Groove Metal based barks and Death Metal snarls. The added gang vocals are used to good effect and do not overshadow the drums from Albert, though the bass is lost a little bit from Thomas, but his work is picked up more on some of the other tracks. As the album carries on listeners will notice the band continues in their style of singing and using their titles in various languages from Spanish to Icelandic, so there might be a bit of a language barrier, but the band does their best to create an energetic atmosphere as many of the songs such as ‘Venjanca’ and ‘Sabotatge’ have that addictive sing along/ scream song quality so it won’t make much of a difference. As the album progresses there is more of a Thash element to tracks like ‘Accio,’ so a little bit of the melody is lost as the band opts for more Slayer styled chugs and aim for rhythm.

‘No Em Va’ varies things up a bit with the almost Sabbath/ Ozzy styled opening with a bit of a Doom laden touch, but it quickly picks up to feature some of the better drumming and aims for a faster Death Thrash track than most have been used to so far. Fans will start to notice that despite the anthemic quality of the songs they tend to start sounding the same after a while, though the closing ‘Plou Poc…’ is more Groove Metal oriented, almost touching on Sepultura territory and with the backing guitar melodies adds for a varied mix that doesn’t feel like Siroll! are still trying to aim for being Soulfly clones, but sadly the song ends too quick to really digest. A lot of the tracks are short here, so maybe a few more with some variation of the intro might have garnered a bit more maturity and growth for the band. Still, “Al Gra!” is a quick, polished effort that has no fat and delivers a quick burst of Death/ Groove/ Thrash Metal that listeners of the mid 2000s Metal will probably enjoy very much. Compared to their previous effort, the album does not seem bloated, but rather refined, but perhaps a little too much.
