Atrocity – Okkult

The last time I listened to Atrocity was over 10 years ago. These guys have done many shows in Europe since then and when they’re not performing as Atrocity, they show up with a female singer as Leaves Eyes. Atrocity has written music in a lot of genres. Starting out as a technical death metal band they changed their style complete with each album, not afraid to try black, doom, gothic and folk. Even industrial/EBM was given a try. This new record is made up out of almost one hour of melodic death metal.

The first track of the album begins with a two minute long orchestral intro which flows into one of the fastest parts of the album. Most of the album has the orchestral sounds in the songs which creates a lot of variation in the songs, both in tempo and feeling. Two tracks ‘Death By Metal’ and ‘Haunted By Demons’ don’t have the orchestral parts and are a bit more aggressive, oldschool deathmetal fans will certainly appreciate this. Every song has got some mid tempo and some fast parts, but no song really stands out from the rest.

The album has a length of 54 minutes, which is long. Especially as the singer’s got a monotonous voice. His grunts are a little lower in some parts, and there even is a clean singing part, but 90% won’t surprise.  On the other hand; being able to actually hear the lyrics is something where other bands fail.

So overall these German guys have recorded a  nice album. There will probably be some black/death metal fans who will appreciate this, but this won’t be my album of the year.
