Axis Powers - Marching Towards Destruction
A band from the west side of Sweden often makes you wanna think they'll ride "the Gothenburg sound"-wave which seem to be a disease in that area. But not Axis Powers. These guys get their inspiration from the east side of the country and Stockholm in particular. Around the early 90´s. Dismember comes to mind. Entombed as well. A big amount of british hardcore/punk like Doom shines through. So far, so good. I understand their love for the old heroes, but it´s just not enough to make a killer album. "Marching Towards Destruction" has nothing new. You´ve heard it a thousand times before, but from other acts. Actually Axis Powers do everything by the book, so it´s not a completely bad album, but it has zero personality. Song structures are the same in almost every track, and after listening to the album a few times I wonder what the hell I´m doing. I should have stopped after two or three songs, before it got tedious. The vocals are raw and nice to listen to. For a while, before it gets annoyingly monotonous. Another funny thing, and I don´t know if it´s deliberate, is that the drummer is quite sloppy, probably from listening to Fred Estby too much. Especially when he´s trying to grind. The band started in 1997, so in a way it really is as old-school as it wants to be. It is hard competition in the music scene, even in deathmetal, but if you wonder why you haven´t heard about Axis Powers before, read this review again if you didn´t got bored the first time.
