Biolence - Melodic Thrashing Mayhem
I am not sure about the melodic part; this is pretty heavy from the opening tirade that is ‘Biolence’. Portugal may not be known as a hotbed for metal bands, certainly to my knowledge, but the temptress of desire strike a mighty beat. The EP certainly has its moments of guitar orienteering, and by that I mean the riffs and licks storming from my speakers as it blasts the foundations to a mere crumbling mass. The namesake track has a slight Sepultura feel, whilst ‘Land of Freedom’ happily goes into the realms of heavy thrash or in fact In Flames mid-period. Plentiful groove and downright catchiness makes good listening, for these guys to be an unsigned band the production is pretty top notch with an enthusiasm in the delivery that will topple some of the larger names within the genre of late. All in all, the band pay homage to Scandinavia in both their style and delivery, ‘Blood of the Gods’ in some respects gives homage to Amon Amarth, and then in the next breathe is a Dark Tranquility styled rasp and grab. The bass sound is punchy and vibrant, something often missed in modern production mixes, thankfully, the EP gives all the members an equal slice of the cake. Fans of Melodic Death will relish in the majesty of Biolence, the casual ease of which the solo is executed on ‘Pure’ just simply makes this a band begging to be snapped up by a decent record label. Whilst not a major fan of this genre, I have to say that this is done well and credit is well deserved.
Biolence have extreme delivery with extreme potential in one package. The music is brash but controlled; arrangements are strong and overall are a quality band to listen too.
