Black Epiphany - Catotonic Utopia

This is a man studio project by one Alexander Oden from Iowa in the U.S.A. It is apparently a mix of Industrial, Death and Experimental!! Good grief I really didn’t know what to expect as bar DM I don’t really like too much the other two genres at all, so it was with some trepidation that I bunged this album on!

The whole thing opens up with “Unbound” which boils up nicely, really great guitar riffs throughout this one, quite a dark brooding track that sets up the whole album nicely and gives you an idea of what is to come with this release. “Devoured by Psychosis” is another really good track based on a cracking repetitive riff, really neat track. “Eternal Union” is a lot slower and a lot more atmospheric track that I would say is probably my favourite track on the whole album, it has a real menacing feel to it. “In my Dreams” takes it up a notch again with a really great chugging riff, good drums on it too. The whole album goes on at a right good lick with most tracks sitting between the 4 to 5 minute range with a lot of structure to them all, “The Secret of Your Soul” being a good example of this, starting out very slowly before building up into a very good track indeed that shows of his guitar work to the best!

Well it was with some trepidation that I set out to listen to this album, not really knowing what to expect but it was a very pleasant surprise and a decent release it is too. I would recommend it to all as there are bits of everything in there, enough to please everybody. I know I will be checking his material again.
