Bodyfarm - Bodyfarm

Bodyfarm's debut EP opens up with an epic score of an introduction, which is the main hook of the album to draw people in. Featuring a full blown orchestra that picks up over time,"Into Battle" serves as a great instrumental. Unfortunately, the following four tracks are a bit of a letdown after that great opening. Bodyfarm is more of a direct death metal band that churns along at a mid pace with chugging riffs that are similar to bands like Torture Killer. While the groove is very sustainable, the snarled vocals and continual blast beats from the drums tend to lean towards music that is more along the lines of earlier Unleashed when it comes to a track like "Bodyfarm." Others like "Final Redemption" do the opposite and start out fast before slowing down a bit more for the interlude section, which is often repetitive, but at the same time Bodyfarm try to mix in some technical work in their guitar solos amongst the lengthy five note chugs, so it's more than just an average track. "Slaves Of War" closes the album with the most groove in the way the guitars perform cohesively, but often the vocals tend to go a bit faster than usual and it throws off the pace of the music altogether. At least the bass gets to shine through at some points and there is even a pretty decent solo that isn't buried by the rest of the music. Overall, it is a good start for the band, and perhaps with a bit more groove fleshed out that doesn't stay too repetitive they will become an excellent death metal band. But, at this point, they still sound pretty strongly generic. This will most likely appeal to fans of death metal in general rather than any specialized genre.
