Bones - Gate Of Night
I was extremely unfamiliar of Bones when Twan sent tis EP to review. Nut I previewed maybe 30 seconds and knew I'd dig it. Oh, I do! Hailing from Antwerp, Belgium, Bones has been active since 2010, and unfortunately this is the first offering I've heard. But that means I can go back and check all their tunes. Stoked!
Their most recent offering, a 2 song EP entitled "Gate Of Night", was released on Blood Harvest last week.
This EP starts off with 'Utterance Beyond Death' and is pure fury. Gnarly tone, solid drumming, cavernous vocals and riffs on top of riffs. Thrashy nasty death metal. Some riffs are reminiscent of Pestilence "Spheres" IMO. Obviously with a more filthy tone. My favorite riff happens at 3:25. Just makes you want to mosh around wherever you are. Thrashy riffy section with some intricacies tossed in, making it that much better.
Song 2, 'Gate Of Night', brings back some old school feel. The verse riff is sick, but I (personally) with it flowed together instead of ringing out, but the commanding vocal break has a certain appeal to me as well. This song in general lacks a flow IMO. There's some space that sets atmosphere, that I wish was just more of their nasty riffs. Although, I bet it would be quite nice seeing it live. This quartet does come out of that section with an almost "Considered Dead" era Gorguts-esque type riff that warms the soul. Followed by a chilling solo, the tune then fades out leaving you wanting more. The lack of flow is honestly the only gripe I have with this song. The only real gripe I have with this EP is, it's only 2 songs. I want more. I need more.
I can't wait to hear more from Bones.
