Bourreau - On Pain Of Death

A French guy by the name of Vorace has decided to go it alone and join the ranks of other musicians by writing, playing and probably producing their own album and whilst usually this approach is seen commonly within black metal it is the death metal genre that sees this debut EP hit the public with five tunes of straight death metal that relies heavily on the 1990s for its influence. Beginning with a sample on 'Murderous Therapy' it is undeniable that Vorace can play extremely well as the opening riff shows with ease (the leads on this EP are done by Thomas Menudier). I did expect some sort of diluted technical death metal but this is full bodied, with a good sound, well mixed and encompassing a genuinely authentic deathly sound, even the drums sound good and offer plenty of variation, with thought going into all aspects of how the songs should sound which to me hark back to the days of Death.

I do think bands like this lose out to full line ups due to the lack of live coverage and even if these types of bands do play the visual impact is less than convincing to me, despite the playing being professional and adept enough. 'Negative Existence' is up next and starts a little slower before changing gear quickly with a blasting foray of meaty death metal that counter balances the speed with well thought out slower sections for added dynamics and creativity. Again the blend of tempos and assorted arrangements on 'Death Sentence' make this EP a solid listen, quite often bands run out of ideas to make their tunes flow smoothly from one section to the next but the music within Bourreau is the opposite with 'Uncontrollable Evil' beginning with almost a black metal riff that is quick but backed by double kick rhythm that is quite catchy really. Whilst never in the realms of the more esteemed death metal out there this is a release for those that love to delve deep into the underground, and dig out that obscure release and give it a whirl which you should as it's worth your time and attention.
