Brain Dead - In The Deep Of Vortex

If you're looking for a good thrash metal band with powerful guitar players and an engaging lead singer.... keep searching. "In The Deep Of Vortex" is the debut album of the Italian thrash band Brain Dead.  Released in December 2008 under the Punishment 18 label, it features their first two EPs; "Rage oOf Thrash" and "Double Face" and a few new previously unreleased tracks.

Current lineup includes:
Felix Liuni-vocals
Danieli Vitello-Guitar
Daniel Giovanetto-Drums
Haron Zorzi-Bass

The songs on this album come on strong with fast drum rhythms and guitars but leave you feeling brain dead just after a few minutes of listening. Overall the album is uninspiring, boring, and repetitive. Every song on this album reminds you of something you've heard before... something in a bad dream. Originality and complexity are definitely lacking in this album.
The drummer and bass player do a good job of carrying the band. Their speed and timing are great. Although I have heard more complex rhythms from other thrash bands, they are good at providing the necessary rhythms to keep the band in time.
Unfortunately, weak guitar solos plague this album. The songs are filled with repetitive chords and Randy Rhoads type "twangs" mingled with copy-cat rhythms.
The vocalist is poor and his screams sound strained and are overused. He alternates between heavily accented raspy vocals, screams, and growls... none of which does he do a particularly good job of. His poor vocal range can be heard on "The Double Face" where his attempts at harmonizing are laughable.

Sorry guys, I love good thrash and "old school" thrash... but this just doesn't cut it. Good thrash metal comes from bands who can play complex chords, have a wide vocal range, and can produce original rhythms. These guys don't make the cut. To be brutally honest I'm not sure why you would waste your time with this album unless a really bad 1980's thrash knockoff band from Italy is your thing.
I've heard better stuff come out of my grandma's AM radio. Have to give this one a horns down.
