Broken Edge - Unleash My Soul

Broken Edge is a veteran French metal band who has been making heavy music since the early nineties. Their first release came out around 1994 and now fast forward to 2013 they are still offering the metal community crushing heavy albums. “Unleash My Soul” is six brilliant tracks of thrash, groove, hardcore, and just pure overall aggressive Heavy Metal. Everything about this release is intense from the starting note. I can’t name one dull track or out of place sounding part. Each track is creative and has a distinctive fierce edge.  Also, the musicianship is beyond amazing. The guitar playing is very fluid and the lead parts jump out with technical skill. Solid grooving rhythms accomplished by the drumming and bass playing allows the songs to flow while still being diverse and technical sounding. There are multiple riffs and rhythms going on to where these guys are playing at such a high calibre that people might forget how extremely difficult it is to play this type of intense music. Probably the one area that I think gives this album a strong original sound is the powerful vocals provided by Broken Edge’s singer. He reminds me of a certain America Groove Metal singer named Randy Blythe except the singer in Broken Edge adds a more classic Death Metal style to his approach. I like his vocals because he is not over doing the growls and by bringing in some hardcore groove influences he presents the lyrics in a harsh tone that allows me to make out what he is saying. Combine the thunderous guitar riffs with his vocals and you have a force that can knock you off your feet.

The album starts extremely strong with a great song called, “Kill Your Gods.” From the mind crushing lyrics to the wicked instrumental parts this song causes me to want to break my chair. Then the guitar solo leaves me speechless as the guitarists lets high pitch harmonic notes ring after doing some quick fluid note sweeps. Right when that song ends the next one called, “Marching With the Fools,” enforces Broken Edge’s aggressive style of playing. The singer pronounces each vocal line with tremendous rage and the lighting fast heavy rhythms perfectly compliment the song’s attitude. Another great track on this album is “Stone Cold Evil.” The main guitar riff has a heavy thrash groove that is catchy and gets the head banging. Again, this singer delivers fierce emotional sounding vocals that never seem to loose their effect. Also, the guitar playing keeps getting better and the solos are definitely a high point on this album. I think song five, “I Will Come Again,” is my favorite song because the guitar playing is extremely technical along with the drumming. How Broken Edge is able to combine multiple technical parts into one song is truly unbelievable. Their consideration for detail and ability to capture every explosive sound makes this album stick in the listeners mind to where they will want to play certain songs over and over again.

Now, Broken Edge’s music may not be the music you want to play if you are trying to relax, but if you are looking for a high energy emotional release then I recommend this album without hesitation. “Unleash My Soul” is another great example of how a heavy metal album can allow people to forget their day to day frustrations by listening to good loud head banging music. The first time I listened to this album I instantly started moshing around my small dorm room. These guys delivered an awesome album to which I thank Broken Edge for keeping the Heavy Metal spirit alive and head banging.
