Cannibal Corpse – Butchered At Birth
This is the only Cannibal Corpse album that I can listen to without hating. Purely a great display of death metal how it should properly be played. The riffs were domineering with ingenuity, the leads were technical and precise, plus Chris’s vocals fit the music perfectly. Totally an innovative release with entirely original guitar action. Nothing bad to say about this album.
Tempos ranged from utterly fast to some that were slow filled with a thick, crunch toned guitar. The guitars are at their best on here. Entirely precise and not annoying whatsoever. I think that if Chris was still in the band, Cannibal Corpse would’ve definitely progressed as musicians in the death metal community. However, now it seems like every release there’s nothing new and no progression whatsoever.
Timing and production was perfect. Couldn’t say anything bad about this album. It is a sheer onslaught of death metal the way it is supposed to be played. Just the songwriting ruled on this release. That was a highlight, the guitars especially. Chris with his vocals kept it underground for the band. There was some guest vocalists on here, so it isn’t just Barnes with deep throat the whole way through. Just almost all the way through.
Every song deserves praise but I tend to favor “Meat Hook Sodomy” the most. However, every track deserves praise here. The music is entirely innovative the whole way through. I didn’t like the bonus track “Covered With Sores” much though because it was live and Barnes wasn’t on vocals. Not that I dislike Corpsegrinder, I just think that Barnes was the best for the band. The tone of the guitars fit the low bellowing vocals totally.
A total onslaught of death metal with a great deal of variety on here. I totally dig this release the most out of Cannibal Corpse’s entire discography. This is the only one I’m keeping, all of the rest it all sounds the same. Not on here though. The best songwriting, vocals, and production. If you want death metal that totally kicks ass and doesn’t bore you to death, “Butchered At Birth” is the one for you!
