Catacombs - Echoes Through The Catacombs

This United States Doom metal guru has released two albums to date, the EP ECHOES THROUGH THE CATACOMBS reviewed here and a full length released on Solitude Productions. This EP was originally self-released but Solitude Productions of Russia has Catacombs’ full-length available for purchase if you are interested (the site info is below) and has re-issued the EP. Catacombs is a one-man project created under the name Xathagorra Mlandroth and this EP is made up of two long tracks. “Consigned To Flames Of War” (16:24) is the short one and the title track, “Echoes Through the Catacombs” (13:39) is the long one. The EP also contains both of these tracks in remastered versions. Both tracks are beautiful doom but the second one adds a level of texture that lacks in the first one.

The first track, “Consigned To Flames Of War,” is built upon a structure of repeating slow high-note guitar notes. Very depressive black metal. But the second one, “Echoes Through the Catacombs,” opens with a melancholia of plucked guitar strings, part of a chord fragment methinks, as opposed to riffed, that adds a slow contemplative quality reminiscent of that great depressive black metalist, Varg Vikernes. The effect of this track is of course that it is slower, less like “metal,” and more like an atmosphere of distortion and gloom. Thus the proper song title. Catacombs also has a full length out released on Solitude Productions. I have not heard it yet but would love to soon.
