Coalition - Solis Impulsio

This album possesses pretty solid foundations and has a cool production, although I am not totally convinced by their death metal heritage that is claimed in some sources, it is much more of a modern affair, but pleasing non-the-less. During ‘Purgatory Freeze’ you lose some power in the guitar riffs, there lacks a little sustain, but then ‘Reborn at War’ redresses this balance, and even includes what I would call thrash riffs during the double time section. I can hear where the band are trying to go, but hallow ground such as a hybrid of Bolt Thrower and Cancer still may still require some further effort to attain the claim of walking on that similar ground and this is really down to the recorded sound more than anything detrimental in the bands music.

This Belgium band engages some melodic depth on ‘Symbolic Sedition’ prior to a really catchy riff and passage that has a death styled breakdown that eventually gives you some basic wah-wah pedal work. Though thoughtful, this unfortunately clashes with a loud picking sound that kills the majesty just a little bit. All in all, the music is with well-meaning but the studio sound massively hinders the final result as too many string sounds are too audible in the mix, it depends in your taste, but it is neither raw nor is it polished. It does sound underground and a little amateurish during some of the the guitar solo work if I am to be brutally honest. For what it is, I am sure Coalition will hit the receptors of many death metal fans but they will be more in tune the current crop of artists mixing a thrash groove rather than anything of heritage or of any vintage disposition.
