Coffin Rot - A Monument To The Dead
YEOWWWWWW. BANGER ALERT! I remember getting their demo and being way stoked. Then hyped on the Molder split. I was waiting for this full length. When it was sent my way, I immediately started to jam it. And have many many times since.
Coffin Rot is a quartet hailing from Portland, Oregon. They play thrashy OSDM. And do it well. So, now, onto their debut full length, "A Monument To The Dead".
Right out the fucking gate with a scorcher opener, 'Copremesis'. A heavy pounding intro makes it's way into pure fucking shredding. D Beating. Blast beating. Crushing. Disgusting vocals. Some tasty bass fills tossed in. It's very reminiscent of the no frills, all killer-no filler approach to DM that caught my attention some 30 years ago.
'Saw Blade Suicide' is up next. Clocking in as the shortest track on the album, it an absolute blazer of a song. These tunes are 1,000% infectious. They fucking nail the old school feel and add in the Coffin Rot touch. It's got that OG OSDM groove riff to open, pops into the ever so loved trash beat/riff, then summons '89 with a brutal double bass riff that will leave heads (old and new) very pleased. A well placed and constructed solo adds another layer to this tune filling it out as an instant fave.
I dare you to not freak out at the beginning of 'Necrotized'! But, you've got to continue, obviously. This song, IMO, contains a kinda quintessential OSDM riff that has infected my soul. Right at :18. Stoked it comes back time and time again. Let's be honest, I'm stoked on all their riffs.
They save the longest tune for the ender. Titled 'Coffin Rot'. I'm, again, reminded of the early days. It seemed like many of the classics had the pounder track. Just slow, heavy, never lets up.......Just sheer fucking weight. Riffs Riffs Riffs, then out of nowhere, when you're in their grips, tempo change with more of the trashy death metal feel we've quickly grown fond of. But only for a sec. Then back to the pummeling. A well crafted and tasteful solo accents the contagious base riif of this tune. Wait, what's this? Take that same riff, add a harmony and a blast beat to fade out the album? Why the fuck not. GOLD!
These dudes have created a piece of work that can and will be loved by any fan of the old school as well as any fan of death metal in general. Pick this up the second it is released!!!!!! Thank you, Coffin Rot. Now, come play VA!
Stand out tracks (if I can't say all of them)
'Copremesis'
'Necrotized'
