Coffins - March Of Despair

Coffins present their latest slab of doom entitled "March of Despair". Five tracks clocking in at 28 minutes to enter the nightmare. It brought me back to kindred woes for I always find doom enjoyable. The mid paced dreariness is all there. The guitars are low tuned and heavy, the beats chug along, and the vocals are of deep anguish. Excruciating anguish. You maybe reminded of Craig Pillard and even Winter with the throat gargles and pronunciations. Melody is not present at all as things fall towards a morbid bluesy vibe most of the time.

Everything leads towards an absolute essential then. Perhaps. These beasts certainly play with conviction. However the songs themselves dont really hit me. Im not a stranger to this band since I came across bits and pieces before. I thought this ep would appeal to me more than it did. By the time I reached the last track, "Corpsegrinder"; the classic Death demo vs Massacre album track, I felt no progress was made. It gave its implosion from the getgo, then tredded familiar territory too often. I wouldnt walk past it on a shelf to rot for it does have worth. I would say its charm is short lived in the longrun.

Upon careful examination it does have moments. Sometimes its a challenge to make a nitch with doom. Its known things are depressive without the feeling of light. A twisted aura to disturb the deepest masochist, I think is necessary to bring out its full potential. Contempories that come to mind with this album are Autopsy, Mortician, Ataraxie, and Hellhammer of course. If you feel the need to call the coroner then go for it. Try this one weird solution to ease your
solitude.
