Crypt Of Silence - Beyond Shades
Nearly 50 minutes long with only four tracks means you are in for a long journey right? But will it be a bleak but pleasant journey or a mere traffic jam of re-hashed ideas? ‘Beyond Shades’ is this Ukraine bands first full length debut, this region and label are quite prolific within this doom death sub-genre, it may be the case that this fits more naturally with these surroundings, but from an outsiders point of view, it has to be entertaining and a little different, which I am happy to say it is so.
The guitars sound like a twin prong attack, they sound multi layered and result in a very strong sound. After a long wait, ‘Walk with My Sorrow’ begins to delve into a bittersweet reaction of emotion. You gain to depressive emptiness but you also gain a level of joy because the sound has purpose. The guitars do all the work no matter how long each track is. I expected to lose my train of thought on this release with tracks verging up to fourteen minutes long, but slap me sideways, for the fulfilling reasons I mentioned earlier, this has legs and this music has a soul.
This is not like the many other doom death releases from this label, to gain a level or trait of “epic” the guitars tend to sound multi-tracked and are very dense, I find this much more enjoyable than replacing this with keyboards, this is a major selling point here as I find keyboard pieces lose momentum and there are no keyboards here! This is one of the better more earthy doom death releases of recent times.
