Death – Scream Bloody Gore (2016 reissue 3CD)
Obviously if you are on this site you don’t need to be told how essential and legendary Death’s debut album is. This particular release is a bit of a landmark as it is the last in the reissue campaign which saw 6 of the 7 Death albums as well as the Control Denied album lovingly repackaged and reissued with stacks of bonus material. Granted, they scrapped the barrel with one or two of the releases but on a whole it was a great series that is now coming to a close with "Scream Bloody Gore" being the one that many have been waiting for.
Needless to say after waiting patiently upon receiving my shipping email it was like Christmas had come early when my 3CD edition arrived. Again you don’t need me to tell you about "Scream Bloody Gore" (it’s awesome!) but with listening to the remaster it sounds fresher than ever, the sound is clearer, harder hitting and retains its gritty rawness. On the second and third disc you get a whole host of demos and rehearsal footage including the legendary first take of the album which was abandoned because the label at the time didn’t like it! As well brilliant rehearsal footage. It’s great to hear Chuck goofing around and hearing these classic songs in their rawest form as well as numerous takes on Kiss 'Do You Love Me?'
Again it’s beautifully presented with 3D raised artwork, liner notes from Chris Reifert, Producer Randy Burns and Max Cavalera (as well as a hand written letter from Max to Chuck during their tape trading days!) not to mention being jam packed with photo’s, reviews, interviews, fliers ETC.
All in all this is a piece of death metal history and is a package well worth re-investing in. It’s sad to see this come to an end but it’s finished with a great climax. Hopefully more demos will come to the surface? The "Back From The Dead" demo for example or a decent "Symbolic" re-issue to rival this or a live album? Who knows? One thing that can be said is that Chuck Schuldiner is more alive today than ever and with every passing year his legacy shines on in metals history.
