Demented - Across The Nature’s Stillness
French death metal is rather tasty at the moment, there are quite a few bands leading the charge and displaying some vibrant technical skills. Whilst Demented have a touch of old school about them, they bring their music fresh up to date with some battering technical pieces of music. The drum sound is integrated into the overall sound just like the guitars are usually for most bands, especially noticeable on ‘Shaman’, although the kick drum sound sometimes gets a little monotonous. Maybe on some sound systems you may find they dominate the sound and do not sound organic. In other matters, as you don’t normally expect now with such extreme death metal, it is rather pleasing to clearly hear the vocals, but my only grip would be that they are all sounding in a similar octave a consistency through the album, it depends if you notice that type of thing or not I guess.
The album was mastered in Poland and I guess that is why it sounds very European, especially from that region, but the old groove keeps the bar raised high. ‘Light from the Stars’ has modern booming grooves, some classic death metal syncopations during the finger tapping section of the guitar solo and you are going to have to move around for this one. Gripe as much as you want about keyboards, they do feature, ‘Listen to the Silence’ sounds like they are there. It’s ok; it gives atmosphere but does little else to boost the band’s sound. More notable is the gruffer more guttural vocal approach on this track.
This is a fairly good release where in places has flashes of brilliance and Demented has the ability to fit right in with clever and consistent marketing and promotion.
