Depravity – Evil Upheaval

Whilst this band maybe a relative newcomer to the death metal scene all the band members are in or have been part of other Australian extreme metal acts which suggests that the material offered by this Perth act is expected to be accomplished and, of course, it is. The band’s debut EP "Reign Of The Depraved" from 2016 contained three track of ambitious death metal that wasn’t afraid to push the song writing into a progressive stance especially with the monstrous 'Soul Enslaver' tune. However I digress as this debut full length continues the pristine battering of the EP but also sees that song writing craftsmanship amplified the moment 'Manic Onslaught' starts amid a blizzard of blast beats and outright pulverising ferocity. The technical aspects of the music have been increased too without making it a total fret board gymnastics blur preferring to keep the tech work within the confines of brutal death metal overall.

'Insanity Reality' is a juggernaut, colossus of a song beginning with a tsunami of double bass that will threaten the foundations of your abode as the song has a strafing brutality that is utterly penetrating, just like death metal should be. The gradual fade in of 'Repugnant' is excellent creating tension and a pulverising feel ready for the riff break which bores down into the fabric of the song and when the double bass is deployed the result is nothing short of a cataclysmic detonation which also flows into 'Despondency'. Changing approach for 'The Great Divide' the song has a calm yet sinister opening sequence with an atmospheric backdrop onto which the guitar riffs are stitched. The increasing drama of the song is awesome and had me thinking about Allegaeon or even Archspire for example before the track explodes with an onslaught of drum work that is relentless. There is also a similarity to Immolation and Incantation due to the sweeping shifts in density which is asphyxiating in places and linked to the acerbic vocals with acrimonious glee.

Whilst I am a sucker for pure bludgeoning death metal which this album is, but it is the more technical and occasionally slower songs with atmospherics that I absolutely wallowed in such as 'Tormented' which has punishing double bass drive coupled to the hypnotic riffing that has a sci-fi touch due to the adorned atmospherics. The title is just plain groovy, it has a thundering drum impetus and catchy riff but is still peppered with tech features amidst the remorseless battering which is complete with a Deicide like chorus break we can all sing along to. The album closes with the ambitious and texturized 'Vile Defloration' which as an eerie hook at the start with backing effects. The drum fills give a feeling of escalating tension that is broken by a fluid melodic riff that is saturated in atmosphere as my reference to Allegaeon is more obvious here. The songs build up is incredible as an intermittent double kick cannonade is delivered but still retaining that ability to be progressive yet completely devastating.

Yet again there is another brilliant death metal album from a relatively unknown band as this Australian act serve up their brutality with lashings of technical bombardment under a canopy of sonic demolition.
