Depression - Dekade(nz)

Ever since their last full studio release (a 15 year anniversary special) ‘Das Relikt’, Depression have been a full force to be contended with in my record collection. Happily drifting around grindcore and death metal circles, this style gives the most adorned listener a good piece of variation. ‘Dekade(nz)’ is no different. Upon first listen, there appears to be much more death metal than grind, but when those grind influences come out it blows your mind and keeps you awake that is one thing for certain. A wondrous dirty and heavy guitar sound greets all who dare to indulge in ‘Grace to the World’. Their old school Swedish influence is also apparent in the Grave cover ‘In Love’ (from ‘Into the Grave’). The only downside I have found with this release is that the slower death metal numbers tend to give a rendition of the many Six Feet Under songs (e.g. ‘Honesty’), but in Depression’s favour, they have a much loved penchant for speed, greater than any of those dragged out numbers of the aforementioned to keep the listener entertained. I suppose if you want to pigeonhole this release, there is plenty of old school death metal mixed with ‘Harmony Corruption’ and a healthy unholy dose of grind with a simply magical guitar tone. ‘Grave Robbers Robbed My Grave’ is my personal stand out track; there is a sense of controlled chaos, wonderfully executed. ‘In Death I Am Free’ is a change from what is expected, extreme doom death and a slow burner that takes you almost to the depths of creation, briskly brought back to life with the excellent ‘Drown in Silence’. My only criticism here is that some of the blast beats are not very loud in the mix and you have to train your ears hard to get a full appreciation.

‘Dekade(nz)’ may not be as earth shattering as previous releases, but these Germans still produce entertaining old death/grind to hold them in good stead with the remainder of the genre whom try to copy this approach badly. Depression are a German force of brutal songs structures, intense guitar work and grave shattering guttural nastiness, perfect! 20 plus years in existence, may we have many more years to come of this full force groovy death/grind assault.
