Destroying Divinity - Dark Future
I had the absolute pleasure of sharing a stage with Destroying Divinity way back in 2003 at Obscene Extreme in their homeland, Czech Republic. I stood and watched as they had only one guitarist, a vocalist and a drummer, but my god they were heavy. Back then they were lying down some slamming grooves, although bassless, it got my head moving for sure.
Fast forward about 7 years, 3 full lengths in and have since gained a bass player and we are met with the bands newest release, Dark Future. The production is thick and heavy with all instruments cutting through the mix beautifully so. The vocals are at the very top of the mix noticeably but not overbaringly. The guitars chugg along very nicely whilst the bass has a nice "piano - like" tone. The drums are processed but not to ridiculous levels but thats almost expected in this day and age.
Musically, these guys sound like a blend of Hate Eternal, Suffocation and Dying Fetus. Theres the blasting sections of Hate Eternal with some of the grooves and breakdowns of Suffocation and Dying Fetus. Which is a nice blend if you ask me. The songs are catchy though I was expecting some more noticeable tempo changes throughout as when I saw them, they had alot more breakdown/slam sections but thats ok.
Granted there are some slower parts but truth be told they didnt hold my attention like the way they did back then and I found I lost intrest until these guys started playing fast again. When they do, thats where this album has its moment! When these guys play fast they do have a certain intensity and groove that takes me back to 2003. My main gripe on this album is the lead guitar playing. Its not so much the technique as such its more so what the solo is playing against. Some of the solos sound very off key that it spoils the track. 3 albums in and these are teething problems of a band starting out, not 3 albums in?
Solos aside, the songs are good and very catchy. Im not to sure how this release fares against previous efforts as I hadnt heard of these guys since way back then but I will go and check them out. Im marking this down for the off key solos which to these ears at times sound darn right appauling at times and its sometime "monotonous" pace. Look out for cuts "Purid Stench Of Past" and "Name Written In Blood" which might I add are 2 absolute crackin` tunes. Although this review might sound a lil bad, its not, I still have huge respect for these guys and fond memories of these guys in 2003 and I look forward to hearing more from em! More breakdowns guys, you did it so well in`03.......... lets hear some more!
