Detonation - Reprisal
When one thinks of the idea of a 'reprisal' or 'reprise,' they think of repeats. However, with Detonation's new album, there are no repeats here. This is just another slab of Netherland bred melodic death metal, with a mix of thrashy melodies The Crown and the fury of Decrepit Birth. Every track on this album hits hard time after time with not much difference between each, but listeners can feel the ferocity of the music. With tracks like "Enslavement" or "Ruptured" with the shredding riffs of visceration and relentless blastbeats on top of the snarled vocals, who could deny the conviction behind this band? Other tracks like "Insults To My Heritage" have the heavy chug of a hardcore based song but don't completely drive the music into that category; still, it adds a bit of rhythm and groove rather than just a headache of speed and crushing precision. The album, as a whole, tears into the listener and goes more for ferocity than anything else. Don't expect the typical cookie cutter melodic death metal formula with moments of slow, acoustic passages, highly melodic guitars, or slow instrumentals to start or close the album with. It's just a brief burst after burst of energy per track that hits fast and ends fast, but doesn't leave listeners feeling cheated of the experience.
While some fans might have complained about the previous release, 'Emission Phase,' being too generic, there still might be that complaint with this current album due to its similarity in style, and with not much variation between each track some may say it tends to sound the same after a while. However, if the music isn't broken, why change it? Detonation do what they do best here which is delivering something that is heavy as hell with melody lightly mixed in, but not in a repetitive thrashy way. This is worth checking out for fans of melodic death metal that isn't as mainstream as a band like Soilwork or Dark Tranquillity which tends to follow the path of alternating clean/ harsh vocals and lots of keyboard use. Detonation cut out the fluff and create just as much of an effect with an old school style of melodic death that heralds back to the days of At The Gates.
