Detrimentum - Embracing This Deformity

The UK brutal metal act Detrimentum are hard at work on a brand new release already but in their EMBRACING THIS DEFORMITY, the band pulls the levers and cranks the machines into full production for this brutal beast of somehow post-death metal proportions. This band has risen above any anxiety of influence in such a complete way that even though I will compare this band to several others in this review, there is really no comparison for the relentless force of this release.

Luke’s vocals on this album are so intertwined in through the recording that they do not seem like mere vocals. They seem much more like an instrument of their own. They are not ON for every second, as the guitar is not ON every second. But they are present in the track layers constantly enough to justify referring to them as something other t han just vocals. The only comparison I have for Luke’s style here (and again this is not a real comparison in sound) is Dani Filth of Cradle of Filth. Style wise, there is really no similarity except that C o F is also a UK band. But also C o F exhibits Dani as a singer that leads the tracks by his vocal presence and his very long lyric performances. One also knows that even though Dani has a very distinctive voice his force of presence if always felt. I also get that impression from Luke in Detrimentum. Don’t get me wrong. Detrimentum is no gothesque vampire metal band. Not even close, but the singer exists in the track like only few have in the past.

Musically, there is a barrage essence to the working of the drums and stringed instruments together that reminds me of Cannibal Corpse but without those grooves that C C does from album to album. Detrimentum is heavy (HEAVY) but they are not groovy. It is just the wall of bullets and missiles that I think Detrimentum has similarly to C C. It will be fasciating to see if Detrimentum can outdo this recording with their next release because many bands claim to be heavy, Detrimentum is heavy. But if their statement that they always look to improve and tighten their sound all the time is indeed true, then they have their work cut out for them. EMBRACING THIS DEFORMITY is a hell of a bar for any brutal death band to surpass.
