Deviant Process - Narcissistic Rage
GRRRRAHHHH! Deviant Process sure knows how to start out an album and the prolonged growl gives the listener a wake up call to what is going to be on the rest of the album. Narcissistic Rage is a two song EP released by this Canadian death metal band. The vocals on this album are beyond brutal and the singer’s low voice really adds to the intensity of the music. The first track Persecution is a long piece filled with intense low vocals, blitzkrieg like blast beats, and extremely technical guitar playing. The bass tone stands because the low distorted sound rings out during quick breaks in the intense music. Personally I enjoy the lead guitar parts the most on this track especially when the guitarist does dark melodic sweep picking along with vibrant harmonics. The vocal lines seem to become repetitive with the style that the lead singer uses and his range is not consistent through out the song. Sometimes his growling sounds like Oderus Urungus the lead singer of Gwar trying to sing death metal.
The second track Narcissistic Rage is my favorite of the two because of the immense power in the production and musicianship. From start to finish the song is constantly heavy and suits the singers vocal style. The instruments sound amazing and create a evil groove like death sound. My mind is blown by the dynamic leads and the guitar fills on Narcissistic Rage are great examples of technical death metal. After listening to the two songs I wished Deviant Process added a couple more tracks. Both tracks are well produced and besides my feelings about the vocals I recommend listening to this EP. I would like to see more music because two songs only tell a little about the band. If there were more songs that captured the elements I liked on this album then my rating would probably be higher. Being an EP I believe this is a small taste of what Deviant Process can do and hopefully they come out with a follow up full length album that focuses on the supreme technicality exhibited in the guitar playing on both songs.
