Dim Mak - The Emergnece Of Reptilian Altars
Dim Mak are a special band for me. Each album they have released has been a little jem in my collection. Each one full of guitar acrobatics, blast beats, gravelled vocals telling us about martial arts death moves right the way up to getting hacked to bits with knives of ice. Awesome stuff altogether. So of course when I hear they have a new album coming out, im near leaping out of my skin! And so its with great pride I get to review this new offering, "The Emergence of Reptilian Altars". With this new album, brings change to the Dim Mak camp. It marks the unfortunate departure of long serving vocalist and co founding member, Scott Rush but it welcomes the debut of new vocalist and long time friend of the band, Jospeh Capizzi. But of course question is will he be as good, worse or even better? Opening salvo "Thrice Cursed", proves to us here that Dim Mak are back and open for business!!! Crushing my ear drums with some seriously crazy time signatures and blast. My mind gets in a twist every time I hear them. The production on this record definitely seems a little bit more heavier. The guitars are thicker than previous records which is a good thing but still maintaining clarity for all those crazy solos that we all know and love which still remind me of Shaune's Ripping Corpse days. Again, we have Jon Longstreth on the drums stool again pushing the envelope even more so in his drumming. My mind boggles when I listen to what he plays and I often wonder how because his drumming truly compliments what Shaune plays on the guitar as the two of them meander and twist through the record. My gripe in the audio department is a long standing one, I always wanted to hear the bass patterns too because everything is so interesting I wanted to hear what it contributed to the mix but unfortunately cant be heard. If anything I find the vocals a touch too loud in the mix though however its not enough to overpower the mix and drown out the music. Also, I'm not a fan of the album artwork, considering "Knives Of Ice" was cool as fuck.
Speaking of power, this album has it in bucket loads and dont take my word for it. Go check out "The Secret Of The Tides Of Blood" and "Fully Disassembled" if you don't believe me im sure they'll change you mind. So the new vocalist is he for the better or worse?
Personally I think he's great, if anything he's a little more brutal in his delivery which is cool. The lyrical themes still very much embrace mythology and because of earlier albums I have this ancient China vibe stuck in my head because of it hahah. But for me that's what makes it so cool.
I would absolutely murder to see Dim Mak live and I really do hope they tour this album for I will certainly endevour to check them out. So the question I hear you all ask does this album hold out to the others. Simply put, yes. The Dim Mak guys have done it again and created a little masterpiece and with that one can give it no less than 5. A fuckin blinder of an album! Essential!
