Dismal Lapse - Eon Fragmentation

Dismal Lapse is another interesting technical Death Metal band from the US underground. It all started back in 2001 under the monicker Bled. A demo and an EP were released before the guys decided to change their name to Dismal Lapse in 2008. Another EP with the title “The Nameless Faceless” was launched in the same year and the rainy, dark autumn of 2009 saw the release of the first full length album “Eon Fragmentation”.

At first I have to mention the complex musical ideas which are bursting of a huge amount of technical refinements. When it comes to intricate string work, each song offers a lot of variety including unexpected tempo changes, melodic insertions as well as impressive fretboard gimmicks. Talking about variety: the drumming´s also more than just a rhythm-delivering attachment. Blast beats change into double bass monsters and then into slower parts before all hell breaks loose again. The dudes of Dismal Lapse own an awe-inspiring potential of talent and it sometimes seems like this album is a lesson in technical exercises and superiority. On the other hand, this fact may detain traditional Death Metal worshippers from enjoying “Eon Fragmentation”. By the way: the solid vocal duties were taken over by the drummer. Against the background of the bands music, it might be a tremendous handicap on stage. However, this album is quite impressive and suitable for everyone who´s into Decapitated, Suffocation, Necrophagist or similar bands. Of course this release demands repeated listening sessions to get completely into it, but it´s really worth it and it never sounds like an egocentric demonstration of musical skills. I´m sure every supporter of technical Death Metal won´t regret to give Dismal Lapse a try.
