Don’t Mention The War - Whack A Mole

Experimental Punk? This is a new one to me. This has angry metalcore/hardcore vocals, off the wall sounds and bleeps and squeaks. This reminds you of Burst or Time in Malta on speed in a battle with Converge; it’s a little off the wall. Whilst I am not a fan of this music at all, the merits that can be taken from it are that is certainly a collection of songs that make you take note. As to the musical collective, the jury is still out for me on that one, this would not work for me live, it is too disjointed. When you get into a good groove, these crazy young Dutchmen give you a big head twist and change everything. For me ‘Mother’s Womb’ stands out as the most “normal” arranged tunes, sometimes getting the listener into a daze of fast single note strumming and in turn becomes an enjoyable listen. As this EP progresses, there is much more structure and class in the arrangements, angry teenage chaos is one thing, but the musicianship should still come through. This is displayed on tracks like ‘#5’ and ‘Flesh Before Bread’. The latter encapsulates you with the bass lines and intertwined guitar interludes, this is quite good actually. As a complete package, it is certainly an acquired taste and if you skip the first two tracks, an interesting listening experience.
