Doom’s Day - The Unholy
Cited by some internet sources as Heavy doomy punk and hailing from Canada, this debut album rolls in at a little under 25 minutes and for the first time in a while, it is rather difficult for me to quantify and classify an albums style. There are numerous horror themes but the music is rather dark and dare I say it…almost gothic via the vocals alone. I don’t really find any individual charisma with the songs on offer no matter how diverse some of the arrangements appear at first listen, but ‘She’s Possessed’ and ‘Sabbath Deadly Sabbath’ are the most entertaining (whilst the latter has no similarity to Black Sabbath I might add – even if the demon baby reminds me of the ‘Born Again’ album cover). The music does sound eerie, a little haunting in fact and ‘She’s Possessed’ has some leanings towards punky King Diamond arrangements, the ones with the haunting keyboards (not directly musically the same I might add) at the latter part of the song. But by the time I gain interest, the track ends. I get the musical renditions, but I really don’t like the vocals. They either sound like someone choking or drowning or someone with aspirations to be an operatic singer. ‘Your Last Breath’ is much more Type Negative gothic and by that I mean brooding in nature with undercurrents of sinister dealings.
‘The Unholy’ as an album is a little confusing for meat and potatoes metalheads, I don’t find anything remotely punishingly heavy about this album, even with the almost cross genre approach. The album is a horror punk Misfits and gothic mash up with some traditional metal thrown in on the riffing side on certain songs. The horror and fictional tales of dark arts like ‘Necronomicon Ex-Mortis’ give a seasoned fan of such text something to compare too, but the music and package overall falls into lacklustre obscurity.
