Dr Slaggleberry - Tuc Into The Tar!

My first response to Dr Slaggleberry’s three tracks reviewed here was to laugh. Then the thought crossed my mind that there are other bands that feature rhythm back up to talented guitar players. I think about Mick Barr of course, the series of collaborations with Buckethead, and Luke of Sleep Terror. But each of these has definite composition – Luke plays dark and heavy while he skirts the edges of electric jazz and Buckethead writes actual tracks in which there is a quality of counterpoint. Dr Slaggleberry’s Tuc Into the Tar is an EP of great musicianship that feels like covers somehow. I can’t quite put my finger on it. I feel like the album is full of musical segments that have all been done [for example, the opening to the second track sounds like near- Guns N’ Roses…ugh]. The tunes are built around a multi-genre guitar player instrumental style that showcases powerful high-end riffs and heavy rhythm chops. I usually adore rhythm changes – look at my history of reviews here at BRUTALISM and you will that I bring up the need for a band to break it down often – but the rhythm changes in this EP are cliché. And I believe this to be the case because the band is made of musicians that are good but not creative enough to stand on their own.
