DreamLongDead - Arise Howling Darkness: Of Cyclopean Masonry & Non-Euclidean Geometry

Darkness. Suddenly it all went black damn it. And I was left there wandering what the fuck had just hit me, cos I was sure as hell that I didn't hear no hyper blast and no gravity, and definitely no slammy shit either. Then what was the stuff that was sooooo out of my musical taste and yet managed to blow my mind out so violently? A simple gaze on the CD cover made it clear. With Chtulhu on their side and a bunch of tentacles, DreamLongDead have managed to release their second full length and along with it… the dark.

"Arise Howling Darkness: Of Cyclopean Masonry & Non-Euclidean Geometry" is the fuckin title and this shit is possessed I am tellin ya. If not, how else would I explain this claustrophobic swirl I found myself locked in, unable to get out? 43 minutes of super slow crawling/cave-ish doom death metal haunted by the tentacle beast itself. And then I look back in the CD and realize that all this time I've been listening to three godamn songs. 3 songs for 43 minutes. Do the math people. Assumptions will fail you. But where they'll fail those Greek occultist bastards will prevail. Each of the three songs is an independent  song construction but on the same time both three of them are a cohesive and solid mass.

'The Fallen Arise' is the first one and it really sets the mood right for the continuation of the ceremony. Enhancing dark and slow proceeding chords, along with howling growls and grunts that create a barbaric atmosphere outmatched. The refrain is simply out of this world and what is so interesting is how they manage to change the mood from, super doom-ish death metal, to up tempo for the refrain and then back to the cave again. It is these hops from slow to fast and back to slow again, along with the perfect aura created by the combination of two vocalists and almost 4 vocal lines (at least this is the number I am sure I heard.. maybe there are more) that make these songs a total nightmare. After almost 17 minutes (unnoticed), we move on to 'The Howling From The Hills'. Same mood here but now there's no resistance. Body and soul are totally melted and DreamLongDead can crash it as they like, unleashing their dark aural wavelengths upon it. Everything they say goes and so far they manage to keep us in their vortex. The bass lines during the whole hearing process are a whole individual matter. Fat sound and tight performance. Sometimes going along with the flow the guitars provide and others just counter playing holding the fragile balance  between the riffs and the vocal psalms together. The drums are cement  solid. Minimal performance by a drummer that knows how and when to add and of course chooses to play in favor of the music itself.

Same shit goes for the last song of this tomb. 'Succumb To Unfathomable Darkness' is the name and of course this is what we'll do. The solos and leads in the end of the song add to the darkness those guys want to bring. More fitting than ever. The album ends and speechless as I am left I must declare that this was brutal. Brutal shit lads. Oooh yes. It is not only the blasting or the hyper speed and growling that can be labeled as brutal. This fuckin shit here is damn brutal. You can feel your bowels turn and til the end you're stuck there helpless. Production couldn't be more fitting. Muddy and dirty and on the same time crystal clear allowing everything to be heard loud, giving the whole hearing process new dimensions. Fuckin A. Top notch ladies. Reverse brutality. This is what it is and I am definitely falling for it. Job well done!
