Driven By Impact – Driven By Impact
As a lengthy debut EP by this German band they have all the credentials to build upon its foundation towards their next release knowing they have an armoury of ideas, and even if I think the 'Prologue' intro is a little clichéd 'Building Fear' that follows it has a pounding beat set against a deathly like riffing style with testosterone fuelled vocals which work excellently. Whilst my reference to death metal is relevant the band has forays into groove metal by wielding powerful crunching segues in their songs and when linked to the cutting riff breaks the results are formidable. That groove metal reference follows into 'Burning Bridges' which opens with a muscly riff texture and possesses a semi breakdown riff before an inundation of double bass. I do like the vocals on this release, they’re not quite growls or clean but sit somewhere between with a bellowing tone that suits the music perfectly.
'Interludium' is exactly what it’s title suggests being a calming sequence before returning to the speedy “Experience In Red” with its excellent riff and proper death metal attitude. I would be remiss if I said that this EP was unique as it’s not but what it does possess is weighty charisma and a genuine set of songs that have truly catchy riffs and high impetus provided not only by the riffs but also the powerful drum work which has a thunderous production that I always like. Added to that each song offers subtle riffing tweaks and hooks such as on 'Place Of Gore' and 'Arise From Ashes', the latter of which has a cruising beat and tempo perpetuated by the drums which stomp throughout the song. Added to that we get tremendous lead work, carefully thought out and crafted to fit each track neatly and be relevant to the song instead of being nonchalantly placed for the sake of it.
Closing the EP is 'Monstrosity Of Life' which has a wonderful riff that had me thinking about Mors Principium Est, Soilwork and even Arch Enemy as the song cohesively switches out the opening riff for a gnarly one and a bone crunching pace. Whether you’d consider this EP as offering anything new is down to personal taste but as I said it provides this band with the tools to forge forward as I expect their next release to be nothing short of stupendous and hence I have graded it as a three overall such are my high expectations for Driven By Impact.
