Engorgement - Excrutiating Intestinal Lacerations
New signees of Comatose Music, Engorgement, are formed from members of Embryonic Depravity and Gore Sanctum. These guys play a form of brutal death metal that we all know and love. The guttural slam type of course. Now it's worth saying that this type of death metal has nearly become a faux pas as there are so many gay bands trying their hand at this stuff and well, some bands near fucked it up. Annotations, I'm looking at you! And a shitload of "emo-esque" too can be held accountable for tainting it. I'll be honest and hold my hands up, I love slamming death metal. I love the grooves, the blasts, the gutturals..... everything!
That saying, it's really really hard to do anything outside the mold that will really set you apart from the next one. Give or take, all are molded on Devourment, early of course! They themselves, say Internal Bleeding's "The Extinction Of Benevolence" was the influence for their slamming brutality so you can kinda see where it all stems from. Anyways, these guys are catchy as hell and it's jam packed with the aforementioned slam/blast/guttural formula. The tracks are gore influenced ranging from wanking on human remains to punching the fuck out of paraplegic people to literally having your ass fall out of itself. This is only an EP really as it's not long in passing you by. It's 7 tracks long. I really dug the production here for I could hear absolutely everything. The drums are clean, cutting and pulverizing with a very nice snare drum sound slicing right through the mix. The guitars are chunky and bludgeoning just the way they should. Vocally, although a little repetitive in sound, are really good. I just wished the varied abit more so in sounds. I say sounds as 90% of these type of bands don't have any lyrics, this may not be the case for these guys but certainly the "lyrics" sound like sounds as opposed to words but hey thats just the way this stuff rolls. For me it's hard to say a stand out track as I enjoyed the whole recording but I really dug "Putrefying Colonic Irrigation" and "Full Body Prolapse". I look forward to more indepth full length recording for these guys. A fan of the slam? Buy this!
