Engutturalment Cephaloslamectomy - Glam Not Slam
When it comes to brutal slamming death metal there's usually two approaches to the genre, gore obsessed or comedy based. Engutturalment Cephaloslamectomy definitely lean more towards the comedic route on 2020s interestingly titled "Glam Not Slam". The song titles alone prove the direction of the album to be somewhat laughable, but at the same time it's also a proffered direction of mine rather than the over-the-top brutal rape and slash themes often displayed within the genre.
The band gain no additional scoring for their rather pointless introduction wasting twenty-eight seconds from the very beginning of this record, before pummelling straight into 'Knights In Slammin' Service'; A heavy balls to the walls entrance, that essentially shoves everything this album has straight down your throat. Groove infused riffs and guttural vocals together combine a unique and devastating combo, often the vocal patterns here are so weird that they almost don't fit, but they create an enticing whirlwind of bizarreness that you can't help but get sucked in.
Whilst the tracks on the album remain fairly short (mainly between two and three minutes), there's barely a pause for delay as the songs hit you fast and hard, often forcing a listener to be unaware the next one has played. The hilariously titled 'Some Kisses' is a complete gurgle-fest, but the (almost) cover of 'I Bless The Slams Down In Africa' is brilliantly executed and leaves the listener wishing they knew the lyrics for the entire record, hoping they continue in the comedy fashion the song titles have.
It's difficult to stand out in this particular metal scene, but I believe that Engutturalment Cephaloslamectomy have obviously mastered that. Not only have they surpassed most with their tongue in (ass) cheek humour and entertaining titles, but the production and creativity on the record is actually really great. Aside from a 2014 EP, this is the band's only other release. Why it's taken this long to release I do not know, but damn do I want some more already and I'm curious to see what direction the band will go from here.
