Fatality - Psychonaut

This is a Canadian thrash band and there influences sound very much in the American camp of thrash. Vocally, I hear some references in sound to Whiplash’s ‘Thrashback’ release on the track ‘Thoughts Collide’ whilst ‘Monsterous’ is a straight to the point up beat party anthem. As the album plays the songs grow and mature and thus I would say the latter part displays more technical ability than the former part of the release. ‘Psychonaut’ features some slide guitar which is quite unique to me in thrash and it works out well with the sound reverberating a refreshing change from the usual fretboard obliteration you normally hear in this field for a thrash solo.

The closing instrumental ‘Thrashterpiece II’ matches its description, with a combination of ideas genuinely fulfilling your desires and hunger for traditional thrash. It may be applicable to pick out the harsher almost crossover sounds of the drums on some of the albums songs, but this should not pose any stylistic quandaries, what you have is a decent slab of music that develops as its played. Whilst I won’t go far as to say this is absolutely amazing, I will highly recommend a listen to the bands material. Thrash has undergone a second wave of maturity over recent times following it’s re-inception and influx of bands (once again!) but this band hold true to the original thrash values and thankfully don’t follow a second time around folly of bands “experimenting”! This is thrash no doubt about it and a track like ‘Satan’s Shepherd’ really personifies the tag but also adds a certain level of sophistication to their arsenal.
