Foscor - Those Horrors Wither
Foscor which means darkness in the Catalan language, term themselves as Canalan black metal however, I personally would not view their music (with this album at least) as being black metal. If having to use "black" as a terminology in order to describe this album's music then I would personally term this band with this album as being a form of experimental progressive black metal. I do understand that Foscor's past albums were more along the lines of classic black metal however I have not heard these for myself and can only judge by this present album which I have recently listened to.
Hailing out from Barcelona, Catalonia and have been in existence since 1997 with only 2 of it's members - Fiar (vocals/bass) and Falke (guitars) being there since it's beginning. The other 2 present members Nechrist (drums) and A.M. (guitars) have been part of this creation since 2004 and 2011.
2014's "Those Horrors Wither" is Foscor's 4th full length album. I must admit that I had to listen to this album a couple times before being able to get into it and now can say that I fully appreciate it and where it is trying to go. This is a very colorful album filled with varying musical tones and layers taking from many sources which even branch out beyond the realms of metal such as it's heavy jazz tones and even some pop blended with industrial can be found within these tracks just to give a hint as what undertones of varying styles can be found within these tracks. Interesting and intelligent composition giving it's listener something to feel and think about. This album is an emotional journey with lots of twists and turns that you either will totally love or totally hate, I don't see it getting any other form of reaction other than from one extreme or the other. I feel that it is due to the first couple of tracks is why I had trouble to get into this album for it struck me at first as being not metal and I was expecting something more along the darker realms or even brutal death realms for which this album's cover art suggests to one such as I who has never heard of this band's music before. If I had to compare this "Those Horrors Wither" to any other metal it would be that of the new Enslaved which explains my difficulty in getting a grip on it's music for I am not a fan of the progressive direction in which Enslaved have turned and am sure this is what was bothering me about Foscor's "Those Horrors Wither". I must state though that the vocal work on this album does kill that of those recent progressive Enslaved albums so for me personally this gives Foscor's "Those Horrors Wither" a +1 over any Enslaved album to date lol!
There is a lot of great musicianship here and at least for a progressive styled metal I like the fact that the guitar work is not technical and that it sticks to the old style of playing which to me keeps this album's sound more real. The clean vocals are good, not fruity nor annoying in anyway and the growls even better and for a vocalist bass player this front man keeps it steady which is great to have nothing over powering. The drumming is sturdy and steady as well keeping all glued together as it should be.
If you are into progressive and experimental metal this is not a bad album at all but if you are expecting something black or death forget about this one and move along.
I give Foscor and their album "Those Horrors Wither" 2/5 but to be fair am sure those who are really into progressive or even new styled metal would give this a higher rating.
