Foul Body Autopsy - The Unquiet Dead
Ok first things first. Those of you who read the band name, saw the logo and the artwork and thought they were about to listen to some old school death metal or even some type of brutal death metal... Turn the page. Foul Body Autopsy is a band mostly inspired by bands as At The Gates, Amorphis and Amon Amarth so you can figure out what's the deal here. Thrash metal riffs, combined with melodic leads, and heavy growls, held together by extreme drum patterns that don't tend to exaggerate. Mostly groovy but without hesitating to blast it on occasion or even thrash it up.
This would be a pretty rough sum of this new EP from Foul Body Autopsy and to those who don't yet know the name (myself included), they are no newbies to the scene. A one man band that has already released two foul lengths and a handful of EPs since 2010. "The Unquiet Dead" is their new EP succeeding their last full length of 2018 ("This Machine Kills Zombies"). 'Consumed By Decay' is the track that breaks the silence and the first 15 seconds might get you confused even more than their name might have. A heavy metal intro. Majestic opening followed by a melodic lead that hopefully turns into a proper thrash outburst after the first 16-17 secs. Really good chorus and then, thrashing goes on until the next chorus followed by that particular melodic intro. Riffs that don't seem to match together but somehow Mr. Reynolds makes it all work.
'Consumed By Decay' gives its place to 'The Impending Darkness'. No melodic intros here. Strictly business. Typical heavy/thrash riff that has a great flow combined with the drums and the vocals. The blast beat in the chorus adds a nice flavor to the song that after 2:45 gives its place to the final track in this EP. 'Searching For Sanctuary' is the song that the cradle leans more in favor of atmosphere. A song that will bring in mind Amorphis and early Sentenced, especially in the solo part but still manages to keep the character Foul Body Autopsy want to preserve. Melodic death/thrash at its finest if I may do say so.
Production helps a lot to the entire outcome. Loud and clear boosting the angle Foul Body Autopsy want to bring fourth every time. Couldn't be done differently after all cos the one responsible for mixing and mastering is Mr. Russ Russell (Dimmu Borgir, Amorphis, Napalm Death, Megadeth etc). Great material in safe hands couldn't bring out a better result. The fans of the genre should also check on their previous works as Reynolds, besides being a riff-man, seems to be able to keep a great standard thorough the years. Extremity blended with melody in the same barrel and the result is really good despite each one's preferences in death metal.
