Gloominous Doom - The Feature
Thrash/Death Metal and Ska, two words you would hope could never be uttered in the same breath? Think again… When I first conducted some research into this band, with that sort of musical label, this put me off right away. However, after listening to this little baby for the first time, either I am high or I am in a particularly forgiving, maybe even a happy mood. ‘The Feature’ is quite simply a good fun recording.
Based in Pennsylvania in the US, this 5-piece of eclectic musical visionaries have something of an interesting take on their obvious musical heroes, themes and satirical humour. Delve deep into numbers such as ‘Urine Trouble’ and the exception ‘Lager Jam ‘87’, you have flashes of song writing genius, coupled with a skill to keep the listener entertained and hunting out more. Lose concentration for a few minutes during this album and you will miss some treats. Ok, the metal part of things may not be that original, but mix this with death, thrash and bloody Ska of all things, it becomes an expensive cocktail of youthful culture and relevance in today’s often stagnant scene outside of Europe that relies on the variations of “core” whatever the prefix be.
With the name of this band, don’t expect the follow on music to match your initial thoughts. GD have a good range in their abilities and have a talent for arranging tunes that make you interested in what they are doing. Whilst the guitar sound sounds a little thin with the distortion turned up, the remainder of the mix is pretty cool actually and balanced at the right level. ‘White Worms from Hell’ is GD’s some would say epic, at over 6 minutes; it is one of three claiming the longest track duration but also the bands most varied. ‘Extreme Glacial Movement’ will have all you brutal/extreme death metal fans salivating, the guitars are processed to hell but its punchy, filthy and bruising metal. Later on through this release (‘Desolation of Smaug’) you gain an insight into their melodic death metal influences, but I will let you source those thoughts yourself, but it is another example of a food blender of ideas actually working for a change!
Gloominous Doom have made a fun album, so what if the metal sections are not that amazing, the out of the box thinking behind this band is their talent for arranging tunes that are both brutal and fun at the same time. One of the most surprising and entertaining releases of the year thus far.
