Gravecrusher - Morbid Black Oath
After a demo in 2012 and a split CD in early 2014 it seems that these Hungarian old schoolers are unstoppable. 2014 hasn't yet finished and here they are with a new release. "Morbid Black Oath" is their EP for 2014 and it really couldn't get any better. If any old school freak out there is reading, stop now and go get this. Now as for the more patient ones, here it goes.
First things first. Gravecrusher definitely did not invent the wheel. And in that I have to add that by listening to this EP, you will not change your views on death metal. So... having said that and with it, having loaded off any bad thing I could possibly say about em, let's cut the crap and get to the chase. Gravecrusher might not be the inventors of wheel and in this case, pioneers in music, but the old school death metal they play, will get under your skin sooner or later. 'Triumph Of The Undead' sets things in order right from the start. Mid tempo and groovy, based on riff and building its way from there. The so loved thrashy moments of this type of death metal, couldn't be missing from those Hungarian beasts. Second song 'Necromantic Perversion' and it seems that this EP is going to haunt the stereo for a long time. The attitude and the feeling of the old days is there damn it and I am sure there's no one that can be left untouched by the raw sound, and the clever song structures Gravecrusher have managed to deal. The few blasting moments, will bug no one as they are really short in length and work really well in terms of enriching the music and creating distraction from any possible repetition that would state the EP as dull.
The boyz from Szeged have also succeeded, to alternate brilliantly slow crawlin riffs with thrashy swirling ones to groovy and back again. 7th song 'Cryptic Butchery' ends and you will realize that these are the fastest 23 minutes of your life. Gravecrusher won't bug your head with unnecessary fuzz and technicalities. Their music has its own aspect while on the same time respects and follows the path carved years ago in death metal. The boys themselves clearly follow that path in their personal lives judging from their image, but also from the nicknames (how cult is that???) they decided to use.
Another great point in this EP, besides the songs themselves and the band's performance, is the production. Raw dirty and heavy, but on the same time allowing the instruments to breath, without one getting in another's way. The perfect type of production for this type of death metal. Definitely a plus to this EP which leave us with high expectations on a future full length.
