Hazael - Clairvoyance

This album is a bit of a lost treasure, considering it was a demo released by the now defunct Death/ Doom Metal band Hazael from Poland. Originally released in 1992 the old school sound is there- very fuzzy, gritty and dark that makes the production not really crystal clear and messes with the sound a bit (such as making the drum sound like clicks rather than beats on a track like "Ancient Mags"), but it will still be enjoyable to hear. The Death Metal elements can be heard on a track like "Legate Of Goat Tyrant" with its fast pace, low bellowing vocals in the vein of Grave or Bolt Thrower, and there is even a bit of a groove thown in for good measure so it doesn't feel like complete Brutal Death Metal to give anyone a headache. The Gothic/ Doom elements come in mostly when the pace slows down or there is a highly progressive melodic interlude that changes the atmosphere to spooky and creepy as opposed to obliterating. A track like "Clairvoyance" is a great example of this with the repetitive, slightly out of sync tones of the guitars that are slowed down and with the rough grunts that mirror the debut work from a band like Paradise Lost. With both blends of sub genres of Metal, Hazael made quite a name for themselves over the years up until their disbanding in 1996. For those who miss the crunching, less technologically amped up sound unlike Modern Metal these days, then grind through 'Clairvoyance' for a bit of 90s nostalgia.
