Heathen Beast - The Drowning Of The Elephant God

Indian black metal!! What’s not to like here! This is a total new band for me and this is their second e.p. release. A three tracker that clocks up an impressive sixteen minutes plus, for  a three track release that’s pretty decent. This band have been going since 2010 and consist of Carvaka who does the evil sounding vocals and the guitars, Samkhya on bass and Mimamsa on drums. They seem to incorporate a mixture of atheism and history of their country into their music, clue in the title of this e.p.  I guess as it shows Ganesh on the cover who is indeed the elephant god.

Well it kicks of with the title track “Drowning the Elephant God” and this is a very decent opener, some real evil vocals and neat guitar work, very fast paced song and a good way to kick of this release. The second track start with traditional sounding Indian drums that lay out the riff of the song before it kicks of with more real evil vocals and a hypnotic riff that really is top notch, “Contaminating the Ganges” is my favourite track out of the three as it has it all, a real great song that would grace any black metal collection. I have checked out the scene in India and Pakistan before and there is a lot of good bands out there, nice little scene building up in a place you least expect to find it and this outfit are among the best I have found out about yet, very interesting band who play good evil; black metal. The e.p. finishes up with the shortest track on it “Bakras to the Slaughter” which is nearly three minutes shorter than the other two but that does not make it a bad song!  Again it starts with some traditional drums before the band kick in and it is another good slab of black metal with an Indian twist!! Great stuff.

This is a very good e.p. and it leaves me wanting to hear more form this band who take the genre and give it a nice twist, a bit different from the usual, the drums take it to a different place altogether from the usual black metal fare. If you are into black metal or want to explore music from a different country than the usual, seek this out you wont be unhappy you did!
