Heidra - Awaiting Dawn
Copenhagen, Denmark’s rather capable Heidra pick up with their, brand new, first full length “Awaiting Dawn” right where they had left off with on their solid debut EP release “Sworn To Vengeance.” And that would be with a heaping and bulging helping of some powerful and quite moving viking folk metal, the type of viking folk metal that puts you in the mindset of a true Viking while also rocking your ass off at the same exact time. Upon the very first listen you are mystically transported into a world where you find yourself sailing the treacherous and deadly seas, battling savages and civilized forces alike for land and just, well, raping and pillaging everything in sight right along with Heidra and your other viking brethren.
A world full of tales from the days of yore, tales of uplifting victory and tales of shattering defeat, tales of glorious beauty and tales stomach churning ugliness, it’s all right here the glory, the pain, the life and times of a true viking. And all of this is not just displayed in the lyrics, no, but also in the feeling and atmosphere of the instrumentation as well. For Heidra here are a viking folk metal band that uses every inch of that metal brand, from epic traditionalism, to scathing black, to vaulting power, a little touch of death and a minor splash of prog and used it to infuse their elements of pure folk right into. A marriage of styles that sounds like they would never work together but flow seamlessly into one, homogeneous sound.
A sound where power metal bravado and black metal aggression live in harmony with their traditional folk backbone, a sound where screaming demons dance with operatic angels. A sound that truly sounds like it’s description for once, Viking Folk Metal. ‘Nuff said.
