Henry Kane - Age Of The Idiot
After a full length of 2017 and a split cd following the same year, it was time for Henry Kane to release their second full length. Or should I say his, cos after all it is a one man band. Yep! The man behind Henry Kane is Jonny Pettersson known from his servitude in Wombbath and what he feeds us with here is a fine blend of crust/grind fermented in a Swedish death metal barrel. If what I just wrote makes any sense, carry on reading.
"Age Of The Idiot" breaks the silence without any unnecessary fuzz or any intro of any kind. Blasted and directly in your face. Rough grind chords forming the basic riff while this is laid upon tons of blastbeats. The song constructions are plain, simple and in your face. One-two riffs are more than enough to form a song that lasts 1:30 minutes more or less. The drumming is ruthless. Blastbeat upon blastbeat on their grinding moments and of course the typical 4/4 crust beats come in handy when needed. All used wisely aiming to bring forth the ferociousness of the riffs themselves. The vocals follow the pattern, the entire album dictates. Harsh'n'brutal, following the Swedish death metal way. Some shrieks here and there used as embellishments, but more or less you get the point. Clear pronunciation (as clear as it can get in such a genre) and they too add their stone of malevolence to the monument mr Pettersson wants to create.
The songs succeed one another in a brilliant way. The album has a great flow. Atmospheric moments succeed their rabid ones in such a pace where the entire thing doesn't get tiresome. The songs themselves, although small in length, are constructed wisely enough to recycle a main idea in such a way, so the hearing doesn't get boring. The overall sound is itchy and rough but the mix and master is so damn perfect for this one. You can hear the riffs, the bass and every roll on the kit but on the same time all these work together, forming a cohesive wall of sound so fitting to this crust/grind genre our Swedish friend decides to exorcise his demons with!
The question is: How original is all that? 19 songs in under 35 minutes is what every grind/crust band has to offer. Most of them stop there nowadays and you get the feeling that you are listening to the same track over and over again. Well, guess what.. Not happening here. "Age Of The Idiot" has many songs that will stick under your tongue easily. The short length makes it an easy one to spin again and again and the catchy riffs as well as the clever song constructions and the exquisite production make it a MUST BUY for the fans of the genre!
