Herfst - The Deathcult Pt. 1: An Oath In Darkness
Herfst have begun an interesting story within the confines of their EP 'Deathcult pt 1.' Leaving behind the story of 'Necrotica' back in 2010, this is but more of a prologue to a bigger story of Blackened Death Metal. Within the music on 'Deathcult,' one can hear the skeletal traces of Black Metal bands like Dimmu Borgir or Shade Empire from the more melodic gesture of the keyboards mixed with guitars throughout, the symphonic opening of "An Oath In Darkness," and overall a various mixture of vocal styles from the typical shriek (like that of Dimmu Borgir) to growls (more in the vein of Opeth) and even clean vocals (sounding like The Foreshadowing) featured on "Tonight It Descends." That track in particular should hook listeners due to the storytelling qualities that show the literate fascinations between Black Metal and novels... a style that is capitalized by bands like Cradle Of Filth. What really shows off Herfst's musicianship is the closing nine minute epic "Code Noire." Taking things a step further by two minutes compared to their previous epics, the music carries on more in a typical Black Metal fashion. The spoken word sections of poetic verse are lacking here, but listeners should be more than pleased by the entire collection that this final chapter has to offer. It may seem like it will go on forever, but before one knows it it'll be over, and they'll just have to play it again. In short, both old and new fans of Herfst should be excited for the next EP or full length that "Pt. 2" will grant.
