Iblis - Menthell

Originally a Black n' Roll band, Poland's Iblis has shifted their focus a bit over the last few years. On their debut full length 'Menthell,' one can still hear the catchy Satyricon inspired rhythms within the guitars, but overall the entire sound has gotten more complex and intense, showing more of a focus on Prog. Metal meets Extreme Technical Metal. "White Claudia" opens up with some fast paced drumming but eventually enfolds into the slower, more catchy rhythms. The vocals switch between the harsh, insane bark of a madman to a more chilling, subtle voice of an operatic serial killer, playing off each other back and forth like a rock opera. Other tracks like "12 Sycamores" offer no moments of patience as the entire track just blows right through with the drumming sounding like a machine gun all the way through with a few bursts from the bass, but overall the pace is pretty ferocious. The vocals, of course, chitter, laugh, mock, and bark in their maddening, progressive way to continue to make things interesting.

"Poison In Your Food" tosses in some jazz-fusion elements to keep the complexity up but not to the point where the sound is completely confusing. "Don't Eat My Legs" is a bit of an odd track with some psychedelic elements that will throw listeners off track, though it is not meant to be taken seriously. "Origin" pulls things back towards the more standard side of this avant-garde Black n' Roll group, but the music is far from being stale. Only when it comes to the "Outro" will listeners possibly become annoyed that the track is a very quiet, ambient piece that sounds pretty much like silence. On the ironic side, it is possibly the craziest thing that Iblis could have done because it is far from what would have been expected from their sonic assault many minutes before. Still, overall this effort is different, special, and deserves consideration from those who would prefer to listen to something that is far from the generic side of Metal.
